New legislation is looking at cleaning up messes left by abandoned oil and gas wells in BC.
Resources Minister Michelle Mungall introduced a bill yesterday that would amend legislation to improve funding for orphaned well site restoration.
The bill will replace a number of taxes and in their place leave a levy payable to an industry funded program.
On top of that the new legislation seeks to give regulators the ability to force companies to carry out restoration on inactive wells.
The number of abandoned sites has increased over the past few years, and the bill aims to prevent them from causing future problems.
