LNG Canada preparing to start construction this year: report

It sounds like good news could be just around the corner for a long-anticipated LNG project in Kitimat.

LNG Canada CEO Andy Calitz told an audience in Vancouver Wednesday that the company is preparing final investment documents and plans are in the works to start construction on the liquefied natural gas project this year.

Calitz was quoted by Business In Vancouver resources reporter Nelson Bennett as he spoke at GLOBE forum 2018.

BC’s LNG industry has seen a number of cancelations and delays, but LNG Canada, a consortium led by Shell, is the largest of the liquified natural gas projects still in the works.  Shell announced it was delaying its Final Investment Decision in February, 2016.

Bennett quoted Calitz directly in a later follow-up tweet that LNG Canada’s plans for construction to start in 2018 remain on the table.

In February, LNG Canada shortlisted two contractors for engineering, procurement, and construction of the facility.

At the time, it said a final investment decision on the Kitimat facility would happen sometime in 2018.
