A major washout has closed the main route between Williams Lake and the central coast.
RCMP say the 150 metre long washout on Highway 20 was reported early Monday morning when rushing water swept a car away.
Emergency crews were able to pluck the lone occupant from the river and transport him to hospital for treatment.
Corporal Madonna Saunderson with North District RCMP says emergency personnel have been scouring the area located about a half kilometre west of the Sheep Creek Bridge.
The transportation ministry says crews are conducting a geotechnical assessment of the site today and will update the estimated duration of the closure once that work is completed.
The ministry is also examining potential detour routes in terms of safety and capacity and will release more information later today.
