Attorney General and Minister Responsible for ICBC David Eby said the Liberals have been taking money from British Columbians for far too long.
Eby says according to a report ICBC has been in a grave financial crisis for the past two years and the NDP government won’t stand for it.
He goes on to say that “This report makes it clear that ICBC has been in crisis for years, something which the former Liberal government largely ignored. Rather than addressing the serious issues facing the corporation, the BC Liberals used insurance fees as a rapidly growing hidden tax. Drivers have been paying the price,” said Eby.
Eby says the crisis is so bad, 30 percent rate increases will be needed if it is not immediately addressed.
The BC NDP government is not looking at considering photo radar or moving to a no-fault system
Although they are unclear about specifically their next move, they are no longer going to let ICBC charge good drivers astronomical rates.
Between 2013 and 2016 there was a 23 per cent spike in accidents in BC, according to the report.
The report says the system fails to recognize good drivers, and that is one thing that will be addressed immediately, as well as making sure bad drivers get the brunt of the bill.
They are looking to freeze the first year rates and charging drivers with high-end cars more money.
Eby is focused on moving away from the need for litigation and claimants having to fight for benefits people have already paid for. Eby said people shouldn’t have to fight for wage replacements and medical care.
As of right now, Eby says ICBC is not a sustainable company because of the way the Liberal government has been running it.
