The new NDP government released their first financial plan.
Finance Minister Carole James presented the budget update yesterday, with 291 million dollars over two years to build and operate 2,000 housing units for homeless people.
These buildings will have 24/7 staff and support services.
Another 208 million dollars will go towards building 1,700 new rental housing units which will be used to help out lower-income families and seniors.
The budget also introduced the $100 a month increase in social assistance rates, the cost is estimated at 472 million dollars over three years.
Allowable earnings for assistance recipients are also increased by $200, bringing the total to $600 a month earned without a reduction in pay.
