Smithers residents are still being told to boil their water.
Despite repeated attempted by city workers and northern health, the coliform bacteria problem remains unresolved after several weeks of attempting to clear the system.
The boil water order went into effect September first and mayor Taylor Bachrach says the order may be in place for some time to come. He says heavy doses of chlorine didn’t work so, the town is draining the system, including the two reservoirs. The mayor says in order to give the all clear signal, tests of the water must come back negative consistently over an eight day period.
After the system has been drained, residents will have to wait for the chlorine residue to be flushed away before the boil water order can be lifted.
Meanwhile, Kitimat residents can resume using their water right out of the tap after the district determined the water had settled after the heavy rains of a week back.
