The RCMP detachment in terrace has been fumigated, and the beetle is no more.
After serving the community for 17 years, the detachment has retired the VW beetle that was used for school liaison, community events and presentations. The non-traditional appearance of the car was intended to encourage interaction between officers and community members
The car was a gift from the town to the force in 2000 and was paid for through donations from the Rotary Club, Canadian Tire community group, Crimestoppers, ICBC and several others sources. The small, non-traditional car was equipped with siren and lights as well as regular police car markings, all of which have now been removed.
Terrace Mayor Carol Leclerc says while the VW became an iconic symbol, times charge and the detachment needs to stay current.
The fate of the beetle hasn’t been determined.
It will be replaced by a regular patrol car from the current fleet.
