The head of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission has called on Canadians to join in a journey toward reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.
Justice Murray Sinclair released the TRC final report Tuesday, a culmination of six years worth of heart-wrenching testimony from residential school survivors.
Survivor Eugene Arcand told those gathered that the commission has awakened the country and the earth to the plight of Indigenous people in Canada and around the world
Arcand closed his speech by urging all people to tell their family and extended family that they love them and to give them a hug.
He says you don’t know what it’s like to go through childhood never being told that you’re loved or given a hug.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau praised the work of the commission and the survivors, giving his word that his government will renew and respect the relationship with Indigenous peoples in Canada.
