The City of Prince Rupert says vandals have once again damaged the new playground at Mariners Park.
Officials say someone damaged the rubber surfacing at the site Tuesday night, delaying specialized contracting work by 2-3 days.
This is the third and most significant incident of vandalism since construction at the new park began last month.
In previous incidents, a sign base was destroyed, fencing panels were knocked over, and custom concrete forms for the toys were also destroyed.
The damage has tacked on an additional $15,000 in costs, putting the project over budget and behind schedule.
“This project is the result of many community partners coming together to build a park that is accessible for kids of all abilities,” said Richard Pucci, Director of Operations. “It’s obviously very disappointing to see something like this happen.”
The City is in the process of adding additional security measures to protect the site.
Contact the Prince Rupert RCMP if you have any information about the vandalism or see suspicious activity.
