Hundreds gathered in Prince George Friday to mark opening of the city’s First Nations Court.
Provincial Court Chief Judge Thomas Crabtree told those gathered that the court model is meant to find creative solutions to improve the outcomes for Indigenous people in the judicial system..
It is a sentencing court which provides an indigenous perspective, based on a holistic and restorative approach, to sentencing indigenous persons who have acknowledged responsibility for their criminal offence.
The process is much less formalized with the parties sitting at a table and supports available for people being sentenced.
This is B.C.’s sixth First Nations Court.
