Some Kitimat parents may be having second thoughts about sending their kids back to school after a disturbing situation unfolded last weekend.
A letter was sent home Monday with students regarding a threat posted to social media involving several students at Mount Elizabeth Senior Secondary. Although no specific details were provided, the incident was serious enough to alert the RCMP.
The Coast Mountains School District says police believe there was no intent to carry through on the threat– which was removed after RCMP probed the situation–but no details about the nature of the threat have been released.
The District says it takes the threats seriously and must be vigilant to ensure the safety of students and staff at the school. While RCMP have completed their investigation, the school district says it will continue to look into the situation. Until that’s completed, those involved will not be attending school.
Students were told there was a threat at an assembly Monday, that it was being dealt with, and that everyone is safe. The school district letter also offered support to those students who wanted to discuss their concerns.
Both school officials and police are remaining tight lipped about just what the nature of theat was and whom they were directed at. They also caution about turning to social media for some kind of an explaination.
