Avalanche Canada has issued a special warning for backcountry users covering much of BC’s interior mountain ranges, including the Cariboos.
Forecasters say recent heavy snow has come down on a snowpack full of weak, unstable layers.
Forecasting program supervisor James Floyer says the weight of the new snow has brought the unstable snowpack to a critical point, making it very easy for skiers or sledders to trigger large avalanches even in areas that typically might be considered safer terrain.
Floyer says it’s probably a good idea to avoid avalanche areas for the time being, unless you have expert level avalanche training and terrain analysis skills.
The special warning remains in effect from now until the end of the day Monday.
