The BC environment ministry says it’s getting a better idea of how much coal ended up in tributary of the Bulkley River.
The coal spilled into a section of Mission Creek last Friday after 27 cars on a CN freight train derailed near New Hazelton.
Officials with the environment ministry says the train cars along the stream side of the rail bed have been removed, allowing a better assessment of the area.
Crews have divided the creek into segments to help workers begin to remove the coal segment by segment.
Both provincial and federal representatives have conducted sampling of the creek; however, neither the BC environment ministry nor CN have released the findings of sampling so far.
Mission Creek is considered a high value for wild salmon, as it flows into the Bulkley River just before the confluence of the Bulkley and Skeena.
