Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen says he’s worried about an impass at this year’s International Pacific Halibut Commision meeting.
The commision says it didn’t agree on new Pacific halibut catch limits for 2018, meaning 2017 limits will remain in place.
A news release from the Commision says both Canada and the U.S. intend to to pursue lower catch limits this year through domestic regulatory processes.
Cullen says the NDP wants to have the federal government take leadership on the file before it migrates to other areas.
The Commission says the Canadian and U.S. quota-share fisheries for halibut will run from March 24 to November 27.
