A new electoral reform bill has one local MP ready for change.
Skeena- Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen says he is in support of the bill, which looks to ammend the Canada Elections Act, restricting spending from third party groups and reducing foreign influence, while increasing accesibility.
“We’re proudly supportive of the bill, although the Liberals have introduced it incredibly late,” says Cullen, “it tries to go after third party groups as well as address privacy and data of Canadian voters, looking at foreign influence.”
Though he believes that Bill C-76, titled the Elections Modernization Act, is a step in the right direction, Cullen did criticize the Liberal government’s timing.
“The clock has been running out for months now, and it’s very frustrating the government waited past the last minute to introduce this legislation for the 2019 campaign.”
The Federal government hopes to have the bill in place by the 2019 election, though that may not be possible.
