The Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) says it’s “deeply concerned” for the safety of Indigenous women, girls, and gender-diverse people after Greyhound’s cancellation of Western Canada routes.
The association says cuts leave little to no alternatives for safe, affordable, and reliable transportation for those in northern communities, which could force already vulnerable people to resort to riskier means like hitchhiking.
NWAC says there are concerns that the Greyhound service cancellations will also further negatively affect Indigenous communities’ access to economic, political, health, and social services in a profound way.
It’s calling on the federal government to step in and ensure affordable and reliable transportation needs are available.
Greyhound is pulling out of virtually all of its Western Canada routes by the end of October.
