Residents walked 32 kilometers from Smithers to Witset Saturday in celebration of a the shared history of their communities.
The Walk to Witset was part of a broader release of a new book, Shared Histories, which highlights the early relationship between Smithers settlers and the Witsuwit’en Nation.
Author Tyler McCreary has spent the last 3 years performing more than 50 interviews and digging through archives to put together an in-depth look in to the beginnings of the relationship between the two communities.
Smithers Mayor Taylor Bachrach calls the book an important contribution in understanding the town’s history and the sometimes fractious relationship between settlers and the Witsuwit’en.
The project began about 3 years ago as a way to foster better relations between the two communities.
A traditional feast was held Saturday after the completion of the walk.
