In a letter issued today, the Regional District of Bulkley Nechako voiced concerns over the Red Cross’s spending of wildfire relief funds.
According to the letter, the Red Cross received 162 million dollars in wildfire relief funding for the 2017 wildfires, of which they have spent 70 million.
Comparatively, the Red Cross will have just 2 million dollars to spend on 2018 wildfire relief.
As a result, the District says there simply isn’t enough funding to support 2018 wildfire victims.
Now the RDBN are asking the Red Cross to make leftover funds from the 2017 intake available to assist in the recovery of this year’s wildfire victims.
The letter also makes mention of the Red Cross providing 7 million dollars to the BC Fire Chief’s Association, rather than addressing critically underfunded wildfire relief efforts.
