The elected Chief Councillor of the Haisla Nation says she feels like her people are being unfairly branded as sell-outs for their support of the LNG Canada project and the associated Coastal GasLink pipeline.
Smith recently published an opinion editorial piece defending their position, and adds that the “wrath” of social media directed at the Haisla over recent conflict in Wet’suwet’en territory feels like a bit of a double standard.
Smith says what’s missing in the debate is that First Nations, like the Haisla, who have signed on with LNG project and pipeline, have done their due diligence with respect to the environment.
Smith says she remains optimistic that the LNG Canada project and CGL pipeline will continue forward, noting that the entire province has a lot at stake.
