RCMP Chief Superintendant Dave Attfield says discussions between RCMP and Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs are going well.
Meetings are being held at the Office of the Wet’suwet’en in Smithers today to iron out the details of a tentative agreement reached yesterday.
Today’s meetings are intended to finalize the conditions under which the chiefs will agree to open the gates to Coastal GasLink pipeline workers and comply with a BC Supreme Court injunction.
Safety is the primary concern for the chiefs, who wish to keep the gate up to protect those inside the Unist’ot’en camp from future violence and vandalism.
Four CGL representatives are on hand for the meetings, but the chiefs are making it clear that their agreement is with RCMP, not CGL.
RCMP say that minor details may still need to be worked out and that meetings could continue in to tomorrow morning.
