A floating fishing lodge that broke free of its moorings and became grounded on Haida Gwaii is a write-off.
Owner HaiCo earlier cancelled the 2019 season for Hippa Lodge due to uncertainties about the extent of damage suffered in the September incident.
But the company has now confirmed that the damage was so extensive that the lodge has been written off and will be closed permanently with no plans to re-establish any future facility at the Hippa location.
The company has thanked the Council of the Haida Nation and staff who worked to ensure there was little if any environmental impact from the grounding.
HaiCo says it’s working to find opportunities for employees affected by the Hippa closure at its other tourism operations.
