Smithers City Council has applied for 12.87 million dollars in combined federal and provincial grant funding for their proposed culture centre building.
An application has been put forward for the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, which could offer up to 90 percent of project costs.
With a 15.9 million dollar price tag, however, the combined library, art gallery, building is over the program’s 10 million dollar cut-off.
This means the Veterans’ Peace Park project will have to satisfy a climate lens assessment, and climate change resilience assessment prior to approval.
On top of that, council has proposed a referendum to borrow 1 million dollars in city funding for the project.
