McElhanney Consulting Services have completed a feasibility report in to how best to extend the Grand Trunk Pathway in Terrace.
In 2008, the Grand Trunk Pathway masterplan was drawn up and began construction with the support of the City of Terrace.
Since then, various segments of the scenic pathway running across town have been completed, with the walking trail currently capping on the southside of Highway 16, near the intersection with Frank Street.
In an effort to decide how best to proceed with the City asked McElhanney to conduct the review.
Following the 2008 plan, the path would continue west, crossing Frank Street, and requiring extensive infrastructure be built over Howe Creek and under the Kalum River Bridge.
McElhanney’s report found this option to be unjustifiable both financially and technologically.
In it’s place, the report suggested the City instead proceed with a north side alignment option, requiring less infrastructure to be built and utilizing existing road crossings.
This option would see the pathway ultimately reach the same destination, at a much lower 552 thousand dollar price tag.
