Professor Bruce Campbell is set to speak in Terrace today regarding increasing public awareness surrounding the safety of dangerous goods shipped via CN Rail.
Campbell is an expert on the Lac-Mégantic incident in 2013, which saw a 6 million litre oil spill lead to a rail-line explosion, killing 47.
According to Campbell, the federal government has a poor history when it comes to protecting against rail-based disastors.
An estimated 240 more rail cars of volatile fuels are expected to come through Terrace each day when the Vopak Export Facility opens on Ridley Island.
On top of that, a proposed Pacific Traverse Energy propane terminal in Kitimat could result in another 60 cars.
Campbell is the author of The Lac-Mégantic Rail Disaster: Public Betrayal, Justice Denied, and will be speaking on the subject at the Knox United Church at 7:00 this evening.
