The federal government has introduced a bill to preserve Indigenous languages in Canada.
The Federal Liberals say the Indigenous Languages Act will establish a federal commissioner to help support the reclamation, revitalization, and strengthening of Indigenous languages.
Assembly of First Nations National Chief Perry Bellegarde says it’s no accident that three out of four of the 90 different living Indigenous languages in Canada are endangered.
The AFN and Metis National Council are calling the bill a landmark piece of legislation, but the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami is calling it a symbolic gesture from a colonial system.
The government is focused on putting the act into law before the House of Commons rises in June and an election campaign takes over federal politics.
