Meaningful nation-to-nation discussions between the Wet’suwet’en and British Columbia are on the way, according to a joint statement released last night.
Made by Premier John Horgan, Indigenous Relations Minister Scott Fraser, and the Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs, the statement is intended to launch a new reconciliation process.
In the statement, the group says this process will be focused on Wet’suwet’en title, rights, laws, and traditional governance.
Lawyer and mediator Murray Rankin has been appointed to help guide and design the process.
Both sides say they recognize the challenges ahead, but that they have a willingness to take bold steps together.
Meanwhile, Gidimt’en spokesperson, and one of 14 arrested during last month’s RCMP injunction enforcement, Molly Wickham, will be speaking in Vancouver this evening.
Wickham will speak before a packed house at SFU Harbour Centre at 6:00 about upholding Wet’suwet’en laws and jurisdiction.
