Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen and the NDP have tabled a bill that would require all consumer product packaging in Canada to be compostable or 100 percent recyclable.
The private member’s bill is based on an idea by Ben Korving, who won Cullen’s Create Your Canada competition last summer.
Korving, who was joined by his son Aiden in Ottawa for the introduction of the Zero-Waste Packaging Act, says Canadians are ready to commit to making a difference.
Cullen says right now only 11 percent of plastics in Canada are recycled, but says there’s no national legislation to prevent plastic waste that is plaguing the world’s oceans.
