All Prince Rupert residents can now drink tap water without boiling it.
Northern Health has given the City the all clear to completely remove the water quality advisory.
A boil water notice was imposed for the North Coast community in mid-December when tests revealed an increased presence of parasites cryptosporidium and giardia. It was later downgraded to an advisory.
The City now also says additional water testing by another lab has revealed that the December test which showed a result for Cryptosporidium was most likely a false positive.
Mayor Lee Brain says despite the recent information, instituting the boil water notice was the right call from a public health perspective at the time.
Northern Health has no recorded cases of Giardia or Cryptosporidium-related illness in connection with Prince Rupert’s drinking water supply before, during, or after the boil water notice and water quality advisories.
The health authority has directed the City to continue to monitor for protozoa at a minimum of once a month and may request greater testing frequency during times of higher risk to the water supply.
An After Incident Report on the water situation is available on the City’s website.
