As part of Budget 2019, the Federal government has announced that they will be eliminating and repaying treaty negotiation loans.
These loans often forced First Nations already facing money crunches in to further debt as they attempted to pay them off.
Many Nations would find themselves envelopped in years of negotiations only to have to pay a massive sum back to the government.
Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen called the loans a liability and “another form of colonialism”.
Cullen went on to say that, often times, the government undermined their own process in the negotiations.
In April of last year, as part of Budget 2018, the government had begun replacing the loans with non-repayable contributions.
