The B.C. environment ministry has ended a sulphur dioxide alert that was triggered Thursday afternoon.
The automated system first issued the alert at 1 p.m. when levels reached 36.7 parts per billion (ppb) at Riverlodge and continued it at 2 p.m.
At 3 p.m., 1-hour SO2 levels for Kitimat Riverlodge reached 66.8 ppb, considered “moderate” by health officials.
The automated alert was called off shortly after 6 p.m.
The Kitimat SO2 Alert Pilot Project was put in place after public concern about increased sulphur dioxide emissions from Rio Tinto’s modernization project at its Kitimat smelter.
