A new animal control bylaw received first, second, and third readings during yesterdays regular council meeting in Terrace.
With the former bylaw having been ammended nine times since its inception in 1991, the time to repeal and replace the bylaw had come.
Under the replacement bylaw, a new classification for aggressive dogs has been added as a less extreme alternative to the pre-existing “dangerous dog” class.
Now, a dog that has attacked or caused harm to a human will be classified as an “aggressive dog”.
A “dangerous dog” is one that has severely injured or killed a human or pet, or has been deemed a threat to do so by the animal control officer.
In additiona, the new bylaw eliminates zoning conflicts regarding where livestock can be kept, and eliminates the redundant “family dog park” classification.
