Members from the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue, the Canadian Coast Guard, and the Prince Rupert Port Authority teamed up to save a fisherman’s life yesterday.
RCM Search and Rescue teams in Prince Rupert received a call of an overboard individual near Smith Island just past noon yesterday.
Crews were dispatched within 5 minutes of receiving the initial call.
According to a SAR release, the fisherman had become caught in his gear and pulled under water.
His crew was able to pull the fisherman back by pulling on a ground line after he was submerged for 3-4 minutes.
Being the closest available vessel, the Charles Hays, owned by the Prince Rupert Port Authority, took the unresponsive man on board.
They managed to stabalize their passenger before meeting up with SAR and Coast Guard teams at Porpoise Harbour.
An ambulance also responded and transported the fisherman to hospital, were they are reportedly on the road to recovery.
