Newly proposed Forest Act amendments will support public interest and increase fairness for smaller and Indigenous communities.
Under the amendments, announced this morning, forest companies will now need to file for Ministry approval before disposing or transfering tenure agreements.
This means the Minister of Forests and Lands will be able to deny approval if the new arrangement doesn’t align with public interest.
In turn, that will lessen control of major forest licensees over the market, giving smaller operators a better chance to compete for contracts.
The bill must still make its way through legislature.
