Prince Rupert City Council has finalized the 2019 salaries for the mayor and councillors.
Mayor Lee Brain will now receive 75 thousand dollars for his full-time position, while councillors will take home just under 19 thousand.
For the mayoral slot, that works out to a roughly 15 thousand dollar raise.
Two councillors, Nick Adey and Gurvinder Randhawa, raised concerns over the salary jump and the resulting burden on residents’ wallets.
Prior to this year, one third of council and mayor remuneration was considered non-taxable.
Changes made this year have eliminated that, making the full salaries non-exempt.
Councillor Randhawa says that, while that may not be very noticeable due to a 2019 budget surplus, that may not hold true in the future.
City Council also issued approval of a proposed 2 percent decrease in property taxes for 2019.
