Premier John Horgan says he is disappointed that years of bad decisions have led to hefty DFO restrictions on Chinook Salmon fishing.
In response to a massive decline in salmon populations, the DFO announced the restrictions earlier this week.
Under the 2019 rules, commercial Chinook fisheries will close until August 20th, recreational fishers will be limited to 10 salmon per person, and First Nations fishing will be restricted until July 15th.
During a statement released yesterday, Horgan says wild salmon are an iconic species that are vital to coastal communities and First Nations.
He closed the statement with a reassurance that protecting wild salmon is a high priority for his government.
