Six Terrace-based group homes would no longer qualify for tax exemptions under rule changes proposed last night.
City staff brought forward a number of recommended changes to the City’s Permisive Tax Exemptions For Not-For-Profit Organizations during last night’s regular meeting.
Initially written up in 2001, most of the recomended changes simply update or clarify wording within the original policy.
But a few of the changes could have a sizeable impact on local not-for-profits.
Previously, no wording existed to regulate organizations operating housing services.
Under the new policy, only short term stay, non-rental housing, such as shelters or traditional housing with support services would qualify for exemption.
This means that, while Ksan’s 3 shelters within the community would still qualify, six group homes operated by the Terrace and District Community Services Society would not.
Some of the other changes would tie tax exemption approval with each current term of councillors, and adjust the application deadline to June 30th from August 31st.
