A new high-tech way to monitor local fisheries had its beginnings in Prince Rupert.
Ecotrust Canada has launched Teem Fish Monitoring Inc, a new social enterprise that it says aims to provide affordable, world-class electronic monitoring to local fisheries.
The charity first launched its EM service in 2011 when it began monitoring the Area A 2011 commercial Dungeness crab fishery on the North Coast before expanding to other fisheries across Canada and the U.S.
By building its own technology and fostering partnerships with other local organizations, it expanded to monitoring more locations and fisheries across Canada and the U.S., providing services to a mix of fish harvester associations and sectors, First Nations fisheries, and federal government agencies.
Teem Fish has now partnered with Snap Information Technologies Ltd. from New Zealand to expand globally and to meet the demand for high-tech fisheries monitoring technology.
Ecotrust Canada CEO Chuck Rumsey says it marks the fifth for-profit entity the charity has launched.
