North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice says recommendations made in a new report in to West Coast fisheries will benefit coastal communities, and First Nations.
Released yesterday, the report was put together by the all-party Standing Commission on Fisheries and Oceans, and looks in to the state of the industry on BC’s coast.
A few of the recommendations in the report include: DFO financial support for independant fishers seeking licenses, separation of married licenses for sale to new businesses, and mentorship for independant fishers getting their start.
In addition, the report suggests the creation of a commission which will introduce limits on quota-amounts held by one group, and prioritize young or independant fishers.
MP Nathan Cullen echoed Rice’s support, saying that it’s time to take action to support independant commercial fishers on the West Coast.
