Smithers RCMP are warning area residents to lock up their vehicles and homes after a recent spike in property crime.
Mounties say thieves have targeted rural homes from Witset to Quick over the last week, especially those with workshops and toolsheds
Investigators say they use vehicles, sometimes the trailers, to steal tools and larger items like generators and air compressors. ATVs and dirt bikes have also been targeted.
Police say insecure vehicles have also been targeted by thieves in Smithers with loose change, chargers, and ID cards taken. In some cases, an attempt was made to steal the vehicle.
Smithers RCMP are urging residents to lock their homes and workshops, properly store firearms, and take the keys out of their vehicle.
Anyone planning to leave home for an extended period of time should also have a neighbour or friend check on their property.
