The B.C. Wildfire Service is getting a handle on a wildfire near Fraser Lake, but wind may mean a smoky evening for some residents.
Fire Information Office Molly Blower says crews have made good progress on the Lejac wildfire with 70 per cent of the blaze now machine guarded.
The fire broke out Friday, but with hot, dry weather and low relative humidity, the blaze ballooned to 260 hectares by Saturday and prompted the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako to declare a state of emergency and issue evacuation orders.
The fire is still listed at 260 hectares, but Blower says Fraser Lake residents will likely see heavy smoke in the community by Sunday night as the wind is expected to shift direction.
There are 20 firefighters, heavy equipment, and two medium helicopters on the fire with ten more firefighters en route.
The wildfire is suspected to by human-caused, but the exact reason behind the blaze is under investigation.
