Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen says a Senate committee recommendation to sink the government’s North Coast tanker ban legislation is risky for both the environment and people’s trust in political promises.
Cullen says for the unelected Senate to overturn a government bill sets a worrisome precedent for the future and any any remaining credibility left in the upper chamber.
He says there is still time to save the bill, but Cullen says they’ll need the help of many Liberals to ensure it survives a Senate vote.
Cullen says failure will mean that the North Coast of BC will remain threatened by an oil spill which would devastate the ocean that Indigenous and coastal communities depend on.
