A Bill which would have banned oil tanker travel off BC’s coast has been rejected by the Senate.
Bill C-48 would have barred all oil tankers carrying more than 12,500 tonnes of crude oil from west coast waters.
Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen, who has highly supported the Bill, says it’s the first time in his memory that the Senate has defeated a government Bill.
There is still a small chance for the Bill to stay alive, though after years on the table, Bill C-48 would die should the Senate adopt yesterday’s recommendations.
Senators made stops on the Northcoast during committee hearings on the Bill earlier in the month, finding residents were largely torn on the matter.
