The Northwest Fire Centre is responding to several new wildfires in the Cassiar Fire Zone and preparing for more starts given hot weather and drought conditions.
There were three new fires this week region along with holdover fires associated with some of last year’s major blazes.
There are six holdover fires from the 2018 Alkali Lake fire. Crews are fighting a 50 hectare wildfire 40 kilometres northwest of Telegraph Creek and seven firefighters are working a small fire six kilometres northeast of Telegraph Creek.
Of the new starts, the Black Angus wildfire has scorched over a thousand hectares 40 kilometres south of Lower Post and the Liard River fire covers about five hectares 25 kilometres west of Lower Post.
Both fires are believed to be lightning caused, but are not currently threatening any communities.
The hot, dry weather, high to extreme fire danger ratings, and all-time high drought codes in parts of the Cassiar Fire Zone have prompted the Northwest Fire Centre to set up a 150-person fire camp near Dease Lake this weekend.
With more holdover fires expected to crop up, the fire centre says it’s also sending an incident management team to Dease Lake.
