A Haida mortuary replica pole which had stood at the Royal BC Museum in Victoria for decades is set to come down next week.
Pending final confirmation from the pole’s origin clan, it is scheduled to be taken down on Monday.
Carved in 1955, the replica pole has stood for decades in Thunderbird Park.
But a recent structural assessment found that the years of exposure had not been kind to the pole, marking it as a danger to fall on visitors.
Once it is taken down in a culturally appropriate manner, the pole will be held in Fort Rupert to serve as a reference for carvers before being sent back home.
