Canada’s Minister of Indigenous Services says his government is already taking action following Monday’s presentation of the Inquiry in to Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls’ Final Report.
According to Minister Seamus O’Regan, a National Action Plan which will invest in housing, education, and safety along the Highway of Tears is already in the works.
Stretching between Prince George and Prince Rupert, the infamous stretch of Highway 16 is estimated to have seen the disappearance of more than 40 Indigenous women.
O’Regan says the government is working to build 46 shelters along the highway, as well as investing in safety improvements, such as cameras.
He says they will also be funding a National Aboriginal Circle Against Family Violence to support shelters.
Given the Inquiry’s findings, O’Regan says it is important to bring out the National Action Plan as soon as possible.
