The BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres is the latest to voice concern about administrative changes in the Coast Mountain School District.
Executive Director Lesley Varley has written to Education Minister Rob Flemming saying that moving two successful leaders out of their roles sends a message to Indigenous children and families that their success is not important.
Some students staged a walkout last month after the district announced that Skeena Middle School principal Phillip Barron and Vice Principal Cory Killoran would be leaving their administrative positions for teaching positions in September.
The moves have also been criticized by parents and Kermode Friendship Centre Executive Director Cal Albright, who also wrote to the education minister last month.
Varley’s letter goes on to say that the association is perplexed with what it calls the “lack of transparency” around the changes and asks why the administrators were moved without any consultation as per the Aboriginal Education Enhanced Agreements.
