A Smithers gymnastics coach who spent over 15 years in Saskatchewan has been accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl in Regina.
The Regina Police Service says the charges stem from alleged incidents between January, 2002 and April, 2008 while the accused was coaching the girl.
Investigators say 68-year-old Marcel Dubroy of Smithers faces five charges, including Sexual Assault, Sexual Interference, Sexual Assault on a person under the age of 16, and Invitation to Sexual Touching.
Regina Police say it’s not common practice to release information about an accused person’s job, but add that alleged offences are the “result of the position of authority and trust held by the accused”.
Investigators say, at the time police interviewed Dubroy, he was living in Smithers and still coaching young athletes.
A statement on the Smithers Saltos Gymnastics Club website says it was notified of the charges Thursday, but that Dubroy was suspended nation-wide by Gymnastics Canada effective May 21.
The club says Dubroy has been placed on an indefinite leave of absence, will not be involved in any club activities, and is not permitted on the premises.
Dubroy, who was released on an Undertaking, is scheduled to make his first court appearance in Regina July 17, 2019.
