Ideal May conditions led to a massive spike in the number of bear-related calls taken by the BC Conservation Officer Service across the month.
Over the course of last month, officers received just over 32 hundred calls of black or grizzly bear sightings.
That’s an increase of more than 11 hundred over last May, and just over 12 hundred less than the entirety of 2018.
According to conservation officers, balanced weather led to flourishing food sources for the animals, leading to an increase in sightings.
Officers are warning residents to ensure they limit the number of attractants left outdoors and report sightings immediately.
