The B.C. government is recognizing a Haida Gwaii ranch that’s celebrating a century of being in business.
Richardson Ranch began in 1919 when Eric Richardson travelled from Alberta to Tlell River meadows to buy 320 acres of land.
Over the course of seven generations, the ranch, known for its Tlell Polled Hereford herd, has evolved to include a veterinary hospital, a feed and pet supply store, and guest cabins.
“We are not isolated, we are just geographically challenged,” Don Richardson said in a news release. “Although a veterinary hospital, along with a farm feed and pet store are major diversifications, the core that binds us all together is still the ranch.”
The province has recognized the ranch with the Century Farm Award, which honours agricultural organizations that have been active for 100 years.
