After a long and winding journey, a legal ban on tanker travel off BC’s north coast is on the way.
On Tuesday, federal MPs voted 190-86 to pass an amended version of their Oil Tanker Moratorium Act.
Bill C-48 aims to ban all oil tankers carrying more than 12,500 tonnes of crude oil from traversing the coastline.
Last week, Senators finally voted to pass the Bill, despite a recommendation from their Transportation Committee to trash it.
But they didn’t do so without making a few changes.
In combination with previous amendments to the Bill, MPs saw a much different version come through the House on Wednesday than what they gave third reading to last May.
But MPs ultimately opted to accept the altered Bill, much to the joy of Nathan Cullen, who introduced the Bill in 2014.
Cullen, who is leaving the House after 15 years as Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP, congratulated all those who worked hard to push the ban through.
After receiving a final vote from Senate, the legislation is now ready to become law.
